The Right Way To Peel Bananas (You’ve Probably Been Doing It Wrong All Your Life)

Bananas are wonderful fruits that a lot of us enjoy and love to eat but do you know you have probably been peeling them wrong your whole life?

You have more often than not found yourself in a situation where you have a fresh, perfectly ripened banana in hand, but the pesky stem is not cooperating.

You put in some effort, twisting and turning the top of the fruit every which way you can, but by the end of the affair, the whole top fifth of the banana turns into a mess which you can not salvage.

There is however a solution in sight and that lies in watching how monkeys avoid the fuss and attack their tropical bananas from the bottom up.

It’s all a matter of perspective, really. Traditionally, bananas are displayed in grocery stores with the stem at the top, so during consumption, that orientation naturally seems right for all of us.

However, this point of view proves to be problematic even outside of the occasionally squished banana tip. The banana stem is a perfectly designed handle which is simply cast aside when peeling a banana the orthodox way. Mother nature designed this eating hack but made it more suitable for compost purposes.

The ideal banana peeling process is simple; take the banana, hold it by the stem, and squeeze the banana at the top. The peel will then be forced in two, easily allowing the soon-to-be crop consumer an easily manageable path to the fruit itself.  There you have it, a perfectly peeled banana.

Once you have that banana peeled correctly, you can use the peels for a variety of other things, ranging from removing warts to whitening teeth and to make good compost. And if your bananas have gotten just a tad too ripe for your liking, you can also put them to good use through a number of healthy meals.

Now go forth and peel your bananas right! Make the monkeys and everyone you know proud.
